Such are the times, The Lawyer introduced a new category of “ABS of The Year” at its annual awards this evening.
The gong was picked up by Schillings – pictured above – the media boutique law firm which set up an ABS in 2013.
For those outside the UK, and/or unfamiliar with the jargon, an alternative business structure refers to a law firm where a non-lawyer is a manager of the firm, or has an ownership-type interest in the firm.
The UK is one of few countries in the world that allows this style of firm.
RPC was named the overall Law Firm of the Year at the awards bash.

Although strictly one for the legal media geeks, a piece by The Lawyer today reflected on 20 years of The Lawyer Awards, and named the firms that have performed best over the two decades.
There’s no great surprises in the list itself – the biggest commercial firms in the UK – but there’s some interesting nuggets such as the fact that Eversheds was the inaugural winner in 1994 after a postal ballot of readers.
1994 seems an eternity ago now.
