The National Law Journal has released its annual list of the largest law firms in the US by headcount – and this year they have bumped the numbers up to the top 500 firms.
According to the report, the number of lawyers working at the 500 largest US law firms in 2016 grew by 2% to 163,700.
For each firm, the analysis shows not just overall lawyer numbers, but a breakdown of equity partners, salaried partners, and associates.
The chart below shows the top 10 firms:
The brown bar shows the firm’s total attorney count in 2016, the yellow bar the total number of partners, and the red bar the number of equity partners.

The National Law Journal first published its survey of the top 200 largest firms in 1978, before expanding to 250 firms in 1983, 350 firms in 2012, and 500 firms in 2016.
While the NLJ list remains the flagship survey of this kind, Law360 is now in the mix after it launched the Law360 400 in 2014.
What next? 600, 750, 1000?
