This morning I am attending a new event focused on investment in Mozambique.
Emerging markets is one of my main interests, and I’m looking forward to listening to an impressive panel of speakers and law firm partners with expertise in this field.
The organizer behind the seminar is 954 Consulting, a professional services agency.
954 founder and director Scott Appleton and I shared office space until recently, and I know Scott has worked hard to develop his events and consulting business over the last year.
Formerly Scott was the editor of Iberian Lawyer magazine in Madrid, Spain.
During his time there, Scott acquired a deep knowledge of the Iberian market and Lusophone Africa.
As Scott says in his introductory notes to the event:
“The Mozambique Investment Forum has emerged out of a demand from international businesses for an opportunity to gain real practical insight into doing business in the country. Mozambique is without a doubt seeing a dramatic increase in international investor interest as a result of the confirmation of significant gas finds off its northeast coast, and the progression of plans for potentially east Africa’s first LNG plant. Such developments present the potential to transform the country into one of Africa’s largest gas exporters.
Mozambique is already one of the region’s major coal, coke and aluminium producers, and home to southern Africa’s largest hydroelectric plant, the Cahora Bassa dam (pictured). However the country’s economic evolution is not proving easy and two decades after the end of a protracted civil war much still has to be done to develop Mozambique’s transport, energy and communications infrastructure to enable further much-needed international investment.
The Forum intends to draw on the expertise and experience of businesses, experts and advisers already active in country and across the region; to offer an informal environment in which questions may be answered and operational concerns addressed.”
Another business that I am involved in, NovoLawyer, is delighted to be one of the media partners for the event.
“Mozambique Investment Forum – Investment Drivers & Structures” is hosted at the Institute of Directors in the City of London on Thursday, May 16 2013.
