A new online legal publication focused on Asia is to launch on September 15 2011.
Conventus Law, the brainchild of Hong Kong-based former Euromoney publisher Stephen Lai, is targeting legal practitioners doing business in the Asia Pacific region.
Content will fall broadly into two areas: firstly, legal commentary and analysis by leading local, regional and international law firms.
Secondly, Conventus will feature law firm profiles, including firms’ awards and rankings from third-party publications.
This will involve aggregating law firms’ existing rankings from prominent directories such as Chambers Asia, Legal 500 Asia Pacific, IFLR1000 and AsiaLaw Profiles – providing readers with a single reference source for law firm directory performance.
A key target audience will be corporate counsel working in or with an interest in Asia.
According to Stephen Lai:
“Our approach is to listen to the readers. We have spoken to 1,500 in-house counsel doing business in Asia, about what they expect from legal publications and their concerns. The most common issues highlighted were quality content, accessibility, time saving, information overload, personal data privacy and too much advertising.”
To distinguish itself from other legal publishing sites, Conventus is targeting only the top firms in Asia for analytical content.
As well as law firm profiles, partner bios, and co-published articles, the site will feature people moves, law firm press releases, in-house lawyer profiles, and special reports.
There are also plans for video and audio podcasts, supported by heavy use of social media.
When I spoke to him this week, Stephen Lai was keen to point out that, although www.conventuslaw.com will go live on September 15, it will be a “soft launch”, and content will be added over time.
Readers are invited to provide feedback and suggest areas of improvement.
Conventus law promises to be a healthy addition to the legal publishing world, and its entrance to the market coincides with a booming Asian economy and expanding legal market.
